Hongry: hot and angry

August 28, 20241 min read

Forget “hangry”--that cute level of hunger that makes people irritable. It’s been a staple in commercials for some time. A candy bar is the solution.

This weather? It’s bringing the “hongry” out. Even without extreme heat, the hottest days of summer usually see increases in violence and physical and sexual assault.

In this heat, people get mad easier, fly off the handle faster, and swing at each other (or shoot each other) quicker. Hongry is a dangerous state. Staying physically cooler is the solution.

But people live and work in the heat, usually people in the lower middle class and below. Blue collar workers, refugees, immigrants, and yes the people who could do something different but who love blue collar work? the vulnerable ones. Sometimes even being able to stay cool doesn’t slow the burning anger that the heat speeds up.

Stay as cool as you can. And when it comes to controversy, remember that some factions want to keep you so riled you might get “hongry” even faster. Don’t let your blood boil. Avoid popping off at the nearest person who does something or says something you don’t like. Wear a cooling neck wrap. Nurse an ice chip. Amplify your patience and if you do find yourself going hongry?

Find a way to excuse yourself to a cooler climate. Seriously.
