I will never get away from this issue. After all, it’s my surname. And it goes a long way back. That being said, I don’t know how much my paternal ancestors wrangled with the consequences of carrying “Power” as a surname. I don’t know if people who had different issues with power tried to pound my kin into the sand, belittle them. demand a test of how much, or prove that they too had power (an erroneous action as the surname isn’t necessarily the same as the quality).
Nonetheless, when I am upset? The power in the Power gets wonky. Lightbulbs blow, hair dryers and toasters go ablaze, watches run backwards. I need to trade computers and autos--anything with lots of wiring--before year five. Why? At that point, universally, they seem to go…wonky.
So a natural association here is that power, and Power, can be wonky. Let’s stick with the quality instead of the surname.
Beliefs drive thoughts, which drive feelings and actions. Your beliefs about power:
What it is
How you show it
Who you believe should have it
How power is to be used
Where people who have power work and how they act and
What makes power so challenging in relationships
are the foundations of each of our experiences and expression of power in daily life. We teach and model what we have learned, and our experiences inform the questions. More next week.
