Celebrating thankfulness. It's almost never... simple.

Celebrating thankfulness. It's almost never... simple.

I've never cared much for the holiday called Thanksgiving since I learned that in addition to its roots in the ancient harvest cycle feasts, it also has a risk of celebrating the massacre of over 700 native people in 1637.

Oh--and there are a few other sketchy things as well, as more history is discovered. That's the thing: we think we have all the facts, we settle into a new belief, and then whammo, here comes another... fact.

So we have to either dispute it--make the knower of the fact look bad to cling to our current beliefs--or open ourselves up to the possibility that we simply. Don't. Know. Everything. And that's terrifying.

I don't care how much whipped heavy cream you glob on top of that pumpkin pie your Aunt Leesy made. You may dull that sense of terror, but you can't kill it.

What if?

You know what? Be grateful for it. It means you live in an open universe, one that is always growing and changing. One that always has room for hope and healing--and thank yous help bring growth into focus. THEN just lie down and waller and holler (roll around laughing) in the whipped cream...)

And then? Turn one day into a season into a whole year of saying thank you.
